Rationale for Selection

Over the last few years, websites have become more popular as a medium of information, in comparison to printed material. With this new medium comes some major concerns when it is related to content accessible to the public. In addition, the types of websites that are available also reflect the type of content that are presented.

One of the main concerns is the accuracy of the information provided on the net. Almost anyone can place information on the internet and this information is accessible to anyone with a modem connection. The web author does not go through the process of analyzing and editing the information. Even the objective of trying to mediate the content of the text for marketing purpose is not required. This gives the writer the freedom to express his or herself without being required to fulfill  a fixed criterion. This is where the burden of evaluation falls onto the hands of the reader. Other concerns include authority, objectivity, currency and coverage.

Therefore, this website was created with a specific purpose which is to assist students in evaluating websites that they would like to use as references in their research.  This evaluation process will not only assist students recognize the different criteria in evaluating a website, but it will also help students be more critical and analytical of the materials they would choose to site in their research papers.
